The Cambridge B2 First (FCE) Writing exam assesses a candidate’s ability to produce clear, well-organized, and effective written English. It is designed for learners at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and tests the writing skills needed for study, work, and everyday communication.
The Writing paper lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes and consists of two parts. In Part 1, candidates must write an essay based on two points provided in the question. They are also required to include and discuss a third idea of their own. The essay should present opinions, compare ideas, and reach a clear conclusion. It is usually between 140 and 190 words.
In Part 2, candidates choose one task from several options. These may include writing an email or letter, an article, a review, or a report. Each task has a specific purpose and audience, so candidates should use an appropriate style and tone. The required length is also 140–190 words.
Examiners assess writing using four criteria: Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation, and Language. Candidates should answer all parts of the question, organize their ideas into clear paragraphs, use a variety of vocabulary and grammar, and write in a style that matches the task.
To prepare successfully, learners should practise writing regularly, read model answers, expand their vocabulary, and review common grammar structures. It is also important to plan before writing, leave time to check for mistakes, and ensure that the final answer is clear, accurate, and easy to read.
