Structure

modal verb + verb infintive without to, Exception: ought to

The don’t use an “S” for the third person.

I can play the guitar
You could
The cat may need to go out.
He ought to study more.
We shall be going to the cinema on Saturday afternoon

Negative
To make the negative

add “Not” after the modal verb
Contractions
To make the negative

add “Not” after the modal verb
Cannot / can’t (NB: Cannot is one word)

Usage

Model verbs are used to express ability, probability, advice, obligation and habits.

Ability
We can come to your

Probability
The weather report has said it might snow

Advice
You shouldn’t eat so much, you’ll put on weight

Obligation
You must fasten your seatbelt during take off and landing

Habits
“Will” and “would” can be used to express habits eitehr current or in the past.
When we were at university we would go out at least 3 times a week.

3) Name three things you may do this weekend.

4) Name three things you may not do in Spain.

5) Should students be allowed to eat during lessons?

6) Name two things you ought to do every day.

7) Name three things you mustn’t do at work.

9) Name three things you could do when you were younger but can’t do anymore.

10) Is there anything you can do better than your parents?
