IELTS Listening Test

The IELTS Listening test lasts about 30 minutes, plus an extra 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet (in the paper-based test). It consists of four sections with a total of 40 questions. The test is the same for both Academic and General Training candidates. You will hear a variety of accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand, American, and Canadian.

Short-answer questions

Timing and Scoring

You will hear each recording once only.
Each correct answer scores one mark. Scores are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale.
In the paper-based test, you have 10 extra minutes at the end to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. In the computer-delivered test, you enter answers directly and have only 2 minutes to check them.

Tips for Success

Listen carefully to the instructions before each section.
Use the time given before each recording to read the questions and predict the type of information you will hear.
Underline keywords in the questions to help you focus.
Be aware of synonyms and paraphrasing, as the recording may not use the exact words in the question.
Write answers clearly and check spelling, as mistakes will lose marks.
Stay focused throughout—once a recording has played, there is no replay.

Example Question Style

Recording: A conversation about joining a gym.
Question: What is the monthly membership fee?
Answer format: Write ONE number.

Key takeaway:
The IELTS Listening test measures your ability to understand main ideas, detailed information, opinions, and attitudes. Regular practice with IELTS-style recordings will improve your listening speed, accuracy, and confidence.
