Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test is where you speak for one to two minutes on a specific topic. You will be given a task card with a question and several points to guide your answer. You have one minute to prepare and can make brief notes. This section tests your ability to organize your ideas and speak at length without interruption.
What happens in part 2?
The examiner gives you a task card with a topic. For example, it might say:
“Describe a place you have visited that you enjoyed. You should say:
where it is,
why you went there,
what you did there,
and explain why you enjoyed it.”
You have one minute to prepare your answer. During this time, you can make notes using the paper and pencil provided.
You then speak for one to two minutes without interruption. The examiner will not speak during your long turn but will listen and take notes.
When you finish, the examiner may ask one or two short follow-up questions about your topic.
Common Types of Topics
A memorable trip
A favorite piece of clothing
A person who has influenced you
A hobby or interest
An important event in your life
A book, movie, or TV program you enjoyed
Tips for Success
Use your one minute of preparation wisely. Write down key words or short phrases rather than full sentences.
Follow the points on the card, but also add extra information to keep speaking for at least one minute.
Organize your talk with a beginning, middle, and end. Start by introducing the topic, then give details and examples, and finish with a conclusion.
Use linking words and phrases such as “first of all,” “for example,” “on the other hand,” “finally,” and “because” to make your speech flow.
Do not worry about being perfect. Focus on speaking clearly, keeping going, and avoiding long pauses.
Example Part 2 Response
Topic: Describe a hobby you enjoy.
“I’m going to talk about photography, which is a hobby I’ve had for about three years. I first became interested in it when I bought a small digital camera during a holiday. At the time, I wanted to capture beautiful landscapes, but soon I began taking photos of everyday life as well. For example, I enjoy photographing people in the park, street markets, and nature scenes. Photography helps me relax because it makes me notice details I might otherwise ignore. I also like sharing my photos with friends online and getting their feedback. Overall, it’s a creative hobby that allows me to express myself and connect with others.”
Key takeaway:
Part 2 is your chance to show that you can speak for an extended period in an organized and fluent way. Use your preparation time well, follow the card, and keep your speech flowing naturally.
